Google to bid on 700mhz spectrum

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Google has made the formal announcement this morning that it will be bidding on the 700mhz spectrum. This means the wireless providers who had no fear of Google in the past now has a billion dollar force to contend with. There are no other players in with Google, or no partners on this bid.

The Silicon Valley-based company said it will submit a formal application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Monday.

I found some additional coverage this morning that goes into a bit more of this move by Google.

Google wants to own spectrum so that it can compete with Verizon and the other major carriers, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile, which so far have controlled what applications and devices can access their networks.

Technically Speaking, this move by Google is more in lines with their world domination by 2020 - Everything Google, everywhere. But if you are tired of Google you might be interested in creating some virtual piggy banks for your children/your future! mineral makeup

Google and the 700mhz, CBS is pushing, Hollywood is dying

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Google and the 700mhz - Google has gobs of cash. They are not shy about dumping $4.6 Billion on the 700 mhz spectrum. In fact they have dumped $25 million in anticipation of winning the auction for that wireless spectrum. Now the one item I read that has me scratching my head right now, is that Google’s official stance is that $4.6 Billion might be a low bid.

On what planet? In which universe? That amount of money is a lot, and there are only a few companies that I know that could match that amount. As Om noted, Eric has already sent in a letter to the FCC. I wonder if one of the conditions is that all 10,000 plus Google employees receive an Orlando rental home.

CBS is pushing - They are pushing content online, and are saying they will be on over 400 sites by the fall. That is good news for online video. NBC is also pushing online as we have recently seen with their new social network, and other online ventures. To be quite honest, if you aren’t online these days, you probably are in a traditional old Web -1.0 job or career field.

Hollywood is dying - Can you blame the writers for wanting a bit of Web 2.5 money? I really can’t. I mean, why would you want to sit in contract talks with Hollywood studios to try to convince them to put out your masterpiece script? Why not just come online and put it out yourself? The profit margin would be greater if you have a hit, and with CBS coming online, who knows, they might buy it for one of their 400 sites!

Technically Speaking, it is Friday and I hope it is treating you well.

Buy it today, use it anywhere….

That is what the FCC wants to do. Opening up the 700mhz spectrum is the key. The spectrum that is currently occupied by standard television, which go away very soon.

By opening this spectrum, and along with the rules that might be going into update mode as early as today, they will force the devices such as the iPhone to be unlocked. That means, buy an iPhone - use it with any carrier. This would really open up the marketplace for device manufacturers.

When your device is tied to one service, you limit your customer base. Knowingly or not, many of us that still do not have an iPhone are locked to a contract that has a nasty break the agreement, we own you fee. Not many of us want to pay that fee.

Also, keeping a device to one specific service provider limits the devices ability to go anywhere really fast. Many will argue that the iPhone gained swift traction, but that was only due to great marketing by the blogosphere. If the iPhone would have had bad specs or poor marketing, Apple would be sitting on a pile of them right now.

Technically Speaking, you still get more storage (gigabyte wise) with an iPod. Oh, speaking of that - I now have TWO video iPod’s courtesy of playing that Jambaz game. Isn’t it about time you played, or do you really want to see me win THREE?!
