Living without twitter or how that didn’t work!

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Early this week, I said I was going to try to just stay off of twitter entirely. See if I could do it. With business the way it currently is at Lookery and all the cool data that is being shown for free - it was simply impossible! Now many people don’t believe that twitter’s way of communicating is effective business, but we seem to thrive on it with a tweet or three a week.

As you look at my stats, you can clearly see who my audience is and where they are coming from. But since this blog doesn’t get a whole ton of traffic, you should really check out some cool high traffic sites in our network.

Anyone running a site can benefit from statistics like this, and it’s simply signing up and registering your site. Than another 10 seconds to copy and paste the code into your site(s) page(s). Pretty simple. Almost like Google Analytics code, yes, that simple! Not only that, if you are not running ads on your site but rather do that on your own - you now have compelling data to show potential advertisers of your site(s) demographics.

Enough about work, it’s time to hit the buffet! Not literally of course, too many pushy people that like to do the unthinkable - backing up in the buffet line. Actually though, I did hit the buffet for real this week.

Seriously now, one item of interest I saw this morning was about AOL buying SocialThing. Is this a good deal or bad deal? Considering I was reading recently of how AOL is hanging on to a thread of life. Or do they still call that reorganization? My thought was that AOL was going to be bought, but apparently it’s just a shuffle the deck move once again. At least the guys over at SocialThing have now confirmed the deal.

The other item of interest it seems is all the Olympic coverage or lack thereof. I have actually watched like 10 minutes of coverage, beach volleyball. You can get pretty good coverage of what is happening on the major sites such as SI.

I’m glad to see that it appears a cease fire has been signed between Russia and Georgia. I was actually keeping up with that news over any Olympic coverage this past week. It seems like no matter what, there is always someone at the games being accused of cheating, or better yet - a war breaks out somewhere that just shows how barbaric humans really are.

One item to keep watching is how Glam is surging almost quietly online. They seem to be the leader these days, and I have read stories in the past few weeks about how they are overtaking the marketplace. When I had other writers on this blog, I was more in tune with such sites as Geek Sugar. I even did some video back in the day. Quite funny that there are still links to the videos. Out of all of them, I think the banana episode was pretty funny.

Technically Speaking, it’s all about the data and wish I had the time to do more videos again! Unfortunately how do you think Lookery serves billions of ads monthly? Well it’s time for me to get to work, that’s how!!

AOL lays off 2,000 people tomorrow…

Just saw this via twitter, and thought it was worth posting something. Hopefully Frank is not one of them.

Technically Speaking, that is news that sucks.

ABC and AOL, a possible powerhouse deal to bury Hulu - Google plugs that hole

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

ABC and AOL have forged a deal that could possibly be the nail in the coffin for Hulu. Hulu, which is better known in most circles as “Clown Co.” is the misguided, poorly led efforts of NBC. So mismanaged that they have given up and just said that NBC will be offering downloads this fall.

Google appears to have fixed things in their presentation software. This is good news, considering the other news about Google ruling the world! I am hoping that the team of Goog gets things right before taking over the world in 2017 or what ever date they intend to declare “Google Law” on all of us. I would hate for everyone to know any of my private information. Wicked tickets

What am I saying? There is nothing that is really private online. Don’t be a dork and believe just because you have super-duper-over-the-top encryption that you won’t be hacked. Hackers are usually those guys that don’t end up like Mark Zuckerberg, but have put their time in. If they want to exploit you, they will.

Technically Speaking, it’s not fun being owned, but if Google seriously is making a run for domination, just don’t piss off that 13 year old today.

Propeller re-invents, re-loads, and checks out of the deadpool…

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Propeller, AOL’s new social news site relaunched today. Well I guess that last statement was really just another lie, as they aren’t new at all. Read the tag line “re-invents, re-loads, and checks out of the deadpool… ” They are not new, and I feel that without a whole bunch of new, sites like Digg have already passed them up. Yet Digg is still lacking.

What is it today, the year of 2006 rerun and rejected ideas day? I know it was Talk Like a Pirate Day from Marshall’s earlier article this morning, which I really enjoyed, didn’t know it was International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Arrrrrrr! Seriously, though this seems like some zombie crawling out of the deadpool to harass the masses of online users with a big media blitz campaign.

Do we really need a zombie blitzing us with a dead-zone-pool network that didn’t work the first time? I mean seriously, just earlier this week Yahoo launched their version of social fun. Neither one is even close. They are all imitated clones of what sort of works, but not quite.

I feel that someone is really close, and not you MySpace to getting it right - dead on serious. I left a comment to that effect on the above post that was a nice write up on Propeller. I am finding a lot of fault with everything that I’m reading this evening. I bet you can’t tell that. Condo Hotels

Technically Speaking, the writing is fantastic out there tonight. Lot’s of thesis worthy blog posts going down, but yet, something is missing. Do you feel what I’m saying?

A Few More: Microsoft takes on Salesforce, AOL launches MyAOL, thoughts from pmarca

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

A Few More or what is known as a Round Up in other terms:

Microsoft takes on Salesforce - Ah, nice to see the king of the hill taking on a worthy opponent. Why not just buy them? I guess competition is more fun, like how when a cat paws at a mouse until they just kill the mouse.

As growth slowed in recent years at Microsoft’s Office division, which specializes in such business productivity applications as e-mail and spreadsheet creation, the software company looked for opportunities in other areas. Customer-relationship management (CRM) software seemed an ideal candidate. The programs help sales staff track leads and fit well with the contact lists and calendar applications in Office’s Outlook program.

AOL launches MyAOL
- AOL - wow, the memories of dial up days. I guess they have gone way past that user experience, but I had to use AOL once a few years back. I hated dial up.

This morning AOL launched myAOL, a group of three services wrapped up into one customizable page. MyAOL is made up of three services: myPage, a customizable start page akin to Pageflakes or Netvibes; Mgnet–an audiovisual mashup of news; and Favorites–which for all intents and purposes is a Web-based RSS reader. All three offer various ways of browsing, reading, and discovering news and Web content.

pmarca the blogger - Different world out here, eh? :) Yeah, it’s like the wild west, but only 21st century style.

This post is to share lessons I have learned about blogging so far, five weeks into this blog.

First, it’s hard to believe it’s only been five weeks. “Internet time” lives, I can tell you that.

Second, I’d like to truly thank everyone who has read this blog, linked to this blog, sent this blog to your friends, or come up to me at various parties and events to say that you’ve been reading it — and

Technically Speaking, that is it for the moment, but the moment can only be defined by the amount of time it takes for me to think of something else. When might that be? It could happen a minute from now or tomorrow.
