It appears that this blogging code of conduct thing is going way over board. It was great that Tim O’Reilly laid some ground work with his 7 points, and I agree with them. Now it appears that people are suppose to sign up for this?
I agree with the code of conduct, but honestly, how about some common sense? I mean seriously, do we need a big thread started over something that most ADULTS can handle on their own? That would be the minding of your manners, and to treat others online like you were establishing a personal relationship with them; one to one.
I have never been a fan of the flame wars that use to be popular in the 1990’s. I never was a fan of the “your momma” jokes either. All of these supposed good natured ribbing fun things will eventually tick someone off.
Case in point - Did you watch the premiere of the Soprano’s last night? Did you see where “good natured” ribbing can lead to someone getting hurt?
If you didn’t see the episode, basically Tony, Carmella, Bobby, and Janice were all sitting around playing the game monopoly. They were all drinking, laughing, and talking. Tony took a comment about Janice a bit too far. Next thing you know, Bobby (who warned Tony not to talk about his wife that way; Tony’s sister), sucker punched Tony; fight ensues, etc..
Yes, I can shred people verbally and with words. It would be fun, and don’t forget, I use to write lyrics in a metal band! Do you not think that I can come up with some pretty sick and twisted things to say? Example: “I’ve always wondered / What it would be like / To take another life… ” - Yes, actual lyrics on an unfinished song I once worked on a long, long time ago. Do I want to flaunt that by ripping people in this blog, or in a comment thread?
The answer is of course - NO! Full circle time. Do we need a blogging code of conduct, and does everyone need to sign on to this? I say once again - Tim O’Reilly did a very good thing by posting those 7 items as a guide.
Technically Speaking, I believe the best use of this guide would be to keep the URL handy for whenever you see someone getting out of line. Simply, leave the comment of the URL.
I think the point will be made quite clear, and the rest of us bloggers that have some common sense can go about our business. That business would be, getting back to the reporting of cool things, putting down thoughts we have, and generally blogging and practicing our freedom of speech.
