Last Friday I talked about Sprint and the before bed ramble…

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

Sprint killing over 1000 accounts - now it seems it’s a big deal in the mainstream media. This leads me to believe the real reason that top C level executives are leaving old media. They are tired of the pace that it seems to move. Tired of the way old media has not embraced new media. Yes I already talked about Sprint last Friday.

I don’t blame them one bit. That is why I set up Planet Social Media Services. I’m not out to kill traditional places, I’m just here to offer the new companies the option of getting there via the social media outlets that are available. Using the tried and tested methods that rocketed Lending Club to where it is today; only like 50 days after launch on May 24th.

You can’t argue with the data that was reported both by TechCrunch and Mashable. Most interesting is watching from the inside how traditional media sources are also picking up on the buzz that is being created.

Places like the Boston Globe as well as the San Francisco Business Times and Kiplinger.

This all leads us back to where it all started. Well not where it started obviously as there were many that tried to get traction before, but MySpace is now recognized as the leader.

Why? Well fresh out of Europe is this look at how they have taken over the world. Not quite, but they have millions of registered users. I say registered, not active. The activity is high, as I can tell when it goes bonkers, but what is the actual activity going on?

A bit dangerous to talk about, but I’m glad that VentureBeat covered the porn connection of Stickam. I’m sure by the morning there will be some denials as well as clear distinction being made. The facts remain, I know VB does fact checking. Not only will they fact check, but they will double and triple fact check if need be. One site that I trust, will rather run a story late or not at all if the facts are not all checked - is VentureBeat.

Statistics. You have to love them, hate them, or just ignore them and continue doing what you do best. Allen is correct, stats are a freakin’ joke. He makes a valid point about “time spent on a site” as something that could be easily challenged and gamed.

Once again it’s to my main point that I have said many times now. Why are some sites considered the leader, and other stats ignored because the leader(s) say to ignore them?

I am agreeing totally, there needs to be a new stat master and I for one would love to see Allen be the one to erase the slate and come up with something. His background in the industry more than qualifies him to be the new slate eraser and creator all in one stroke.

Technically Speaking, I should have been working some more, but it’s been a long productive day and tomorrow awaits!

DailyHub, business social content

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

dailyhub-logo.JPGDailyHub, looks like a Reddit, Digg, slashdot, etc… clone for business social content. Currently, the #7 item says “Scrap Your Resume, Start Blogging, and Let the Jobs Find You“. Pretty good statement there on how some people do things. One of those people would be this person that is typing this.

One of the things that really is interesting to watch is how business is evolving at a pace like well, nobodies business. I mean, 10 years ago, would you have envisioned doing your financial transactions online? It appears from the report that we push over on Lending Club (Social Personal Finance Report), that is how business will be conducted; sooner than later!

p2p lending is one of those areas that is exploding. It has taken off literally in the past year, check out Lending Club (need that Facebook account for that link) the company I work for. If you have a Facebook account, you can add the application right to your profile in a few simple steps. Whether you want money, or have money to share, it’s a great concept.

Technically Speaking, business is online and this site above (DailyHub) is a good way to see what is hot in business social content. This site was sent over by none other than my long time supporter, MBG.

Social Networks: How many is enough?

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

This is a topic that has been hashed around probably a dozen or more times. That is a dozen or more times every single week. Instead of writing a super long post on my feelings of “if there are too many”, I figured I’d simply ask my readers to participate in the comments.

The basic questions are:

Social Networks: How many is enough?
Social Networks: Do we need more? Should there be less money invested in them?
Social Networks: What improvements do you see needed in the social networking sphere?

Technically Speaking, this is one for the readers; participate if you really want to be considered interactive and web 2.0 (for lack of a better term at this moment). Interact, post your thoughts, comment on what others say. I’ll jump in if something looks interesting or there is a point that needs to be emphasized.

Yes they can…

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

The question of the day is - Can Blogs Become a Big Source of Jobs? - and I think they can. Maybe not a big source, but they will become a “new job market”. In fact they already are. Now of course there will always be the Robert Scoble and Michael Arrington elite class, but I think I’m not doing that shabby as a social media person.

Technically Speaking, it’s time to watch the Sopranos last show now!

Social Media is the class…

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

I like what I’m reading here. It is now being taught as a college course, and that can only mean that soon we will see Rex Dixon teaching.

Ok, maybe I am dreaming, but I can see Robert Scoble, Mike Arrington, Allen Stern, Pete Cashmore, Marshall Kirkpatrick, and many other big time bloggers making guest appearances all over the country.

If you currently are in disbelief of what you are reading, then read the next part here

The 90 students who take the spring 2008 class will study social media like blogs and wikis – while they themselves are studied by other communications researchers. They’ll complete some group assignments in virtual world simulation Second Life, and others in a traditional online forum. Ms. Barnes said she plans to look at whether the latter’s “no-nonsense” look leads to more-organized work, or if Second Life, “where you’ve got the visuals and the stray people,” better stimulates discussion.

Schools not traditionally known for their technology programs are also venturing into the study of social computing. For the past year, Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas has funded two research projects that use social-networking site Facebook to examine student retention trends, in part because the school noticed its students were already spending so much time on the site, said K.B. Massingill, executive director of the division that funded the research. A group of undergraduate students also studied faith-related conversations in Facebook and MySpace and presented their findings to what Mr. Massingill called an unusually well-attended faculty session. “We filled up the room,” he said.

Technically Speaking, if you need a good opening act, you know where to grab the siz’lator of the overkill hype machine known simply as Rex “Duff” Dixon. I’ll even wear the cowboy hat. Anyone still remember that one? ;)

Social Media 2.0 (SM2)

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

I like it. I agree, we are heading into social media 2 or SM2 now. With twitter, the abundance of social networks, and video and audio media available online today; this is now SM2. Blogging is not dying off. 15.5 million or 71 million blogs, many are dead spots which is a no brainer in coming to that conclusion.

My personal blog is pretty dead at this time. The point is, SM2 is here. The over proliferation of video and television content has stated that quite clear. TV shows that are “net” only. Exclusive interviews, done “net” only. Justin.tv, UStream.tv, rex.tv — you won’t see that on regular television! You are shaking your head right now and saying, “Rex, dude, that’s video!”

Exactly. What comes with this video? Another blog. Case in point. It’s not dying off. It’s only getting bigger and better. SM2 will be where you can click once, blog, videocast, podcast - Done! That will be the future mashup built by some company.

Created next week? In a month? Or possibly already being thought of and in stealth mode. Maybe the founder of that stealth company just read that. Maybe that person just became really paranoid and IM a co-founder ,”Dude, that Rex can read freakin’ minds!”

Technically Speaking, the web is moving forward, blogging has always been here. It’s just easier now. I remember a long time ago, in the far away 1990’s blogging was there. It just was kind of “manual labor” blogging. No type, push, click, boom.

Quick Round Up: 4/19/2007

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Zooped - Maybe there is hope for those that like the MySpace freedom. I wonder if they could get a news service up on time?

LinkMyBox - A better explanation then what I posted earlier yesterday.

Cho Seung-Hui video - The question is answered. Social Media is taking over at a pace that we can’t stop or control.

Technically Speaking, I have to roll. It still floors me, how a multi-million dollar corporation such as MySpace can state “7am EST” and still miss the target. Keep checking, it could be online today, maybe. Is it time to start an office pool of “when” MySpace News will go live?

Social Media taking over…

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

We all have now heard about the events yesterday at Virginia Tech. Pete of Mashable brought up a point, while also giving out good information, of should this even have a social spin to it? It’s quite obvious that it already has one from the cell phone footage below, as well as the Facebook groups you can join. Other groups are mentioned also.

The Mexican Earthquake was more live on UStream.tv and twitter the other evening. I believe as sad as this event is, we are now officially in a new age of social media.

OMG: A Social Group for the 50 Plus Year Olds.

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

eons.bmpAgain, some of this stuff that is being funneled to me for my reactions falls on the edge of being a real givemeafrigginbreak case or fodder for the questions WHY?  Being an inquisitive person I will take the approach of asking why.

First, Why do we need another social group? - Also - Why one for just people over 50?  Next think I will be told is that there is a need for a social group for perverted college students who are  NASCAR fans and who are over 50. Grant it that would be a small group, but that is what it is getting to.

But, each to their own.  I personally like to be a part of a group of one.  Read on my geriatric brethren.
