Striking Writers: It’s Steve Jobs (Apple’s) fault!

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Well that is a new one on me. Eisner seems to think that striking writers should be barking up Cupertino Lane, or rather the home of Steve Jobs and Apple.

Eisner, a well-known critic of Apple (whose CEO, Steve Jobs, is a powerful member of Disney’s board of directors), suggested that the profits may be getting sucked up elsewhere. The studios “make deals with Steve Jobs, who takes them to the cleaners. They make all these kinds of things, and who’s making money? Apple! They should get a piece of Apple. If I was a union, I’d be striking up wherever he is.”

Kind of funny how Eisner is also the head of the experimental online show Prom Queen, a show that I referred to in a post the other day. He states that it’s a “fun project” and that it’s a money loser; not a money maker.

Cavuto, naturally, played devil’s advocate and asked Eisner why he’s sticking with it. “First of all, I’m doing it because I think it’s fun, I think it’s the future, and I think it’s interesting,” Eisner replied, “(but) I’m begging advertisers to give me enough money to break even.”

Begging advertisers to give Eisner enough money. I don’t quite think it is to that level, and I really can’t see Mr. Eisner on his hands and knees begging for cash. Everyone knows the truth.

The truth is that online entertainment, be it audio or video is all headed online. Whether the video realm is making any money now, or in three years (where he pulled that number from, I’d really like to know), it really doesn’t matter. What matters is that television with this strike has only hurried the inevitable. That is the death of television as we know it.

With content online improving every day, there is not a need for people to spend their money on cable or dish. There will be the day when everyone will be streaming shows to that flat screen. You may think that there are shows that are not online. Think again, as even the local news has started to put a majority of their stories if not their entire nightly newscast online.

I wish the writers well in their strike, but either they need to come to agreement quickly, or they will be looking for work. Where? Online for some new media company that does nothing but put content out on the internet. No television station licenses, no FCC, no regulation.

Technically Speaking, shows will (as they are now) be a bit sketchy to start, but once the writing begins to improve, you will see that online video is the way to go. If you really think about it, the shows of the 1950’s weren’t that great, and improved over time.

While I’m at it, here is the LC afternoon post - a great look iPhones and Ron Paul even!

Steve Jobs is P.T. Barnum re-incarnated…

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Steve Jobs has to be the biggest spin maker of our time, and a good one. As we all see from this morning’s NY Times story, it is quite apparent that Allen over on CenterNetworks had it right with his iPhone rants. He knew the deal, the people in the know always know the deal. Say that fast 50 times and I will rid you of the spin doctor known as Steve Jobs.

Now I have seen the iPhone up close, and it’s a cool looking device. No doubt about it. But is it really worth $500-600? Let’s think about that for a minute. Not only do you have to spend a pretty hefty amount, but you than have to be strapped in to some proprietary system (iTunes), as well as submit more of your private information via a system that was built for music/video consumption. I have nothing against iTunes, remember - I have two video iPods!

Furthermore, TC goes into what business will choose this go around. The new Blackberry or the iPhone. The one iPhone I saw up close when I was in San Francisco the weekend of the launch had some nice features. Sadly enough, if you are woman with long nails - guess what - the nails aren’t “seen” by the surface of the iPhone! Yes, the person that I knew, she had long nails, and that was one of her main complaints was that sending text’s was not as familiar or friendly as her old trusty Blackberry that was lost.

Technically Speaking, there is a sucker born every minute. I’ll admit, I’ve been tempted as I don’t really like the carrier I have. The thought has crept into my head. I’ve even felt the urge to turn my car into the nearest AT&T lot and plunk down some cash for one since everyone that is anyone seemed to grab one. I bet Steve could even sell a pulse oximeter.

Now the urge to get a BlackBerry which my carrier does support is something I’m gong to more likely consider. Sucker born every minute, and to this minute - I’m still iPhone free.

* This didn’t make Episode 26, but wanted to thank Allen for covering the Lending Club $5,000 Video Contest *

Episode 26 notes:

Virtualmin

Virtualmin is making it easier for web hosting companies to set up and maintain web sites, a process that can be mind-numbingly mundane and tedious.

PartnerUp

PartnerUp wants to help entrepreneurs find the people they need to get their concepts off the ground.

Loopt

Loopt, a Silicon Valley company that lets people interact on their cell-phones as they move around on a map, will now be available on Sprint.

PowerGeeks

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Steve Jobs, the father of the iPod, was on Tuesday crowned the undisputed king of the online music revolution by U.S. music magazine Blender, topping a list of the 25 most influential people in Web music.

iPod Home

A patent issued to Apple Inc. this week may breath new life into the firm’s once touted “Home on iPod” feature, which prior to being tabled several years ago promised Mac OS X users the ability to tote their home directories and account information around on their iPods.

256k and DRM FREE is $1.29

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

Not bad. $1.29 per song, but DRM FREE. Great news, and let’s hope the other companies follow quickly. 192k is all they really needed to encode the files; the human ear can’t distinct the difference at that compression rate. 256 is just that more precise, but the files will be a tad bit bigger. A lot bigger then 128k which has been the standard online for mp3’s for years now.

Technically Speaking, glad it went down as expected - and now — we await the Beatles!

EMI to ditch DRM

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

emi-logo-240.jpgOkay, so it’s not the meet the Beatles that millions would like it to be. It’s going to be EMI announcing that DRM is done. That is why Steve Jobs will be having tea in a few hours time. That still is a big deal.

Technically Speaking, it is still April 1st, so this all comes with a full disclaimer; although it’s already April 2nd over there. We shall see.

Widgets On Demand

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

**UPDATE** - More on what Steve Jobs said about DRM *

Widgets On Demand by Webwag. This sounds very promising, and I am now waiting on the breaking story that Allen was working on. Of course that involved my favorite blue jean wearing CEO Steve Jobs. Stay tuned, as I know he is on top of the story getting it correct!

Technically Speaking, I have some other items to finish up right now. I still have a snippet of the feed on that from CenterNetworks. You will need to check back later there to see if he has some updated news or what new information he adds to the following:

I am watching CNBC right now and they are reporting that Steve Jobs, Apple CEO is stating the DRM for music should go and if it does will open more streams of revenue for Apple. I have searched for 10 minutes to find this story anywhere but cannot. If you have a link, please post it in the comments or contact me and I will update this. As I learn more, I will post more.

The reporters are talking about how 80+% of music is already DRM free. A lot of bloggers have discussed the end of DRM for music. I think being able to buy music from wherever your want, play it on anything you want is a good thing and will only lead to more sales overall.

Vista can’t be hacked

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

I guess Bill is trying to say that you can’t hack Vista? If that is the case, what is the speech exploit thing? Is that just some more smoke and mirrors by the online world to discredit Microsoft? Was I just wasting bandwidth at 5:56am yesterday morning posting that? Honestly I rarely hear of Mac exploits. Rarely.

I am not saying that the possibility doesn’t exist. Any computer can be hacked. That means any as in, if your computer is hooked up to the internet - it can be hacked. Just ask anyone that is a true hacker. I’m not referring to the script kiddies we all associate with the term hacker. I’m talking about the true hardcore hacker who is sitting in a dark room right now, with a dial up connection to the internet, with cans of Mt. Dew empties on the floor, ashtrays full of cigarette butts, and oh yeah, some where in Romania! Just kidding on the Romania part. You get the picture though.

I believe Bill was just doing some chest thumping, and when you are a billionaire that turned the PC world into what it is today, you have the right to do that. I’m not slighting the Mac person at all. It’s a fact, without the whole marketing smarts of Microsoft, we still would be about 10 years behind right now. You can say, “Well SunOS or Linux would have dominated, or BeOS, or Mac OS, or ???” You get the picture. Microsoft did put the power of the PC in the hands of the people.

Technically Speaking, do you really think Apple and Steve Jobs care that Bill Gates just gave them some more time in the blogosphere today? Just go watch Pirates Of Silicon Valley if you have no clue.

Tag Clouds

Monday, January 15th, 2007

I think it’s way beyond time to swing back into the tech. Have you already seen the tag cloud comparison between Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Michael Dell? This was from all 3 of their CES keynote speeches (well Steve’s was at Macworld of course). I just saw it, and it is quite interesting seeing the keywords that all 3 use. I’m sure there will be some further analysis of this.

Technically Speaking, thanks again to Michael dot Net for the IM hook up on the above information. He also has a more expanded write up on the above right here. I told you there would be further analysis! :)

Do I Lie about Apple?

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

No. In yesterday’s last post I made here, it was about how Apple deceives. Now this morning, the hot topic (really last evening), Apple is out giving out cease and desist to bloggers. That’s nice. My last two posts have been about Apple, one was the opinionated one on how Apple plays smoke and mirrors games. The one this morning is the funny or make you smile or the YouTube SNL Steve Jobs send up.

The big news is that since their new iPhone has already had other companies pick up on the interface or UI and basically clone it for their devices.  Hey, if you are going to introduce something, you better be prepared to say,”It’s on sale tomorrow!” Too bad, so sad Apple. Do you really think a whole bunch of the people that “can” will just sit back and “not“?

Nice thing of course, is that I guess they are going to be sending Rex Dixon a free Macbook Pro. No cease and desist here, so as we say around these parts - Technically Speaking, Apple just hit me up and I’ll e-mail you my shipping address.

SNL Steve Jobs sums it up!

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

SNL (Saturday Night Live) has always been able to one up and make a clear statement better then a lot of us. This pretty much sums up the iPhone in one nice Steve Jobs send up.
