Am I here? Quick post on Ubuntu on Dell and Google Adsense video…

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Yes I am. All will become air apparent very very soon. Let’s just say that currently I am “living my dream“. It’s been a very busy few days for me, and I will go update that Link Blog in a few moments. Do I really read Piers Anthony?

Nah, and I probably should. I just thought that was always one of the most creative “roll off your tongue” band names that I wished I would have thought of. The band “Air Apparent” was/is an actual band out of the Seattle area from the late 80’s / early 90’s. I was introduced to them by my old band’s drummer at the time.

What jumped off the news pages this morning while I take a short break?

Well the fact that Dell is going to be releasing Ubuntu 7.04 installed PC’s and laptop’s. This is a big move for furthering the presence of Linux in the world. I hope that the systems are configured so that someone from Potosi, MO can use it. I’m only joking about Potosi, MO; so if you are from there, please don’t take offense. I use that town as an example of where all of these companies need to reach.

It could be Alhambra, IL for that matter. What I am saying is that the distribution of Linux on Dell is a great idea. In fact, it’s much better then talking about algorithm’s to people. The people in Alhambra, IL and Potosi, MO could care less about algorithms. What they care about is the fact of brand. Google, Yahoo, Dell, Microsoft Windows is synonymous while Ask.com, blogging, and Linux is a bit like telling them about the great restaurants in Bejing, China.

I was talking to another startup company person last night, and one thing that I relayed to him was the above fact. You need to get to the people in Potosi, MO and Alhambra, IL. Until you do that, you are pretty much laying below being mentioned in diners in Scotland, SD. The only computer talk there is guaranteed to be, “So I was out on that internet, and I went on Google to find this great restaurant. While I was doing that, I was bidding on eBay, while also prettying up my MySpace page.”

When will it be, “I was online, and read a really good blog, while I was out on Glimpse.com shopping for new clothes (who I talked about here). I also found what I really was looking for on Ask.com, and my Dell E1505n laptop with Linux was smoking!”? When? When the marketing people behind these companies realize the above fact. Until this fact is realized, it will be time to issue Survival Kits for all the employees.

Congratulations to Ubuntu’s marketing team in forging this relationship with Dell. If you buy one today, let us all know how it rocks!

The other interesting item this morning is Google starting a closed beta test of adsense for videos. I will have to agree with this writer, as they seem to be running on day late, dollar short syndrome. I believe I have seen in the past couple of weeks more then one video company trying out different ways of monetizing video content. Google should have been one of the first.

Technically Speaking, that is all the time I have now.

StartupBuzz, Dell Ubuntu, Google denies all to Viacom

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

StartupBuzz - Is a Pligg based site for startups. I took a look, and can tell this site owner didn’t want to modify to many thing like I did on GMAFB. The one thing that clued me in, is the original Pligg site agreement is still there when you click on read more. :)

Dell is choosing Ubuntu - I’d like one! Inspirion or whatever your laptop is now called, top end one please.

Google vs Viacom - Yeah… 12 page responses, and $50 lattes charged backed to both of you!

Technically Speaking, more later.

Saturday Round Up: 4/28/2007

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

AT&T CEO Retires - With a nice $158.5 million retirement package. Even MBG had some parting words to say.

Jamglue - Growth is the key here. Remember the interview I did?

Optisolar - I really don’t think it’s much of a secret now! :)

Virtual Earth V5 API - They released the new V5 API for all the coders this weekend. I am thinking by middle or even early next week, we will see some implementation of the new API? At least if I could code, I’d tinker with it. Maps are cool, and the virtual earth kind of maps are even cooler!

Pikspot - This sounds like SplashCast meets Vertagio. Mashup social network.

Presidential Debates - I guess MSNBC wanted to jump on this before the other place (Huffington Post, Yahoo, and Slate) does their’s in September.

Firefox for ZCubes - Thank goodness for that! Remember the interview I did with Joe? That was unlike the 5 Question ones I did, but a real phone interview.

Obama on twitter - is there not a reason to be on twitter? If you are running for President, you better get on twitter, then of course, follow me! :)

Ubuntu vs Windows - Side by Side comparison.

Feisty Fawn via twitter…

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

If you follow me on twitter, you already know about the failure. There will be no Feisty Fawn upgrade on either my server or my laptop. Both are too old to do this, and I have the CD ISO burned now. It just has no CLI way to do this. You have to use the alternate CD via the gksu method.

This is terrible. If you could reboot, and let the install CD take control, and just be able to type a CLI switch, I bet I could upgrade my Edgy 6.10 to Feisty 7.04. Since I did some searching around, there was nothing that pointed me to any CLI switch.

Technically Speaking, if you know of one (CLI switch), let me know. I’d still like to attempt it. For now, rex.tv is back on the air until UStream.tv stream burps. Should happen in a few hours. * It already burped; checked it to get the link. :)

Feisty Fawn upgrade, time for ReactOS?

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

If you are on twitter, you already know that I’m upgrading the rex.tv server machine as well as the old laptop to Feisty Fawn 7.04.

The issue that a lot of people have with Linux is that it can be slow at times. This upgrade has been going since 1am or thereabouts. It is now 10:20am, or about 9 hours later. I have always been a Linux supporter, but things like this is what keeps Linux from taking over the mainstream.

reactos.jpgWhat will sell to the mainstream (possibly)? That would be ReactOS. ReactOS is not another Linux port. It in fact is trying to be LIKE Windows. It is not stealing from Windows, but writing a new OS that is totally free, non-Linux based, but more like trying to be compatible to Windows.

I read up on the OS, and really from what I can see, the development process is slow. I have downloaded the install ISO, as well as a version that is on on their page (0.3.5b2) but on SourceForge.

When I get another machine I can test it on, I will give it a try. You can download a version and try it if you have a spare machine laying around. This is not a webOS, but a true OS.

Currently, if I tried to tell someone “You have ReactOS here that is a new OS based to run like what you are use to, or over here, I have a server and a laptop upgrading to the latest version called Feisty Fawn 7.04, and oh, it’s been running for 9 hours now… ” — Which one do you think normal everyday people are more willing to try?

Technically Speaking, ReactOS is trying to be Windows instead of trying to sell the world on the benefits of Linux.

Round Up Saturday: 4/14/2007

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

As promised, now that you have digested the first round up for the day, here is another one for you to check out. It beats cleaning your blinds on this rainy and cold day in the STL!

Eight Hours of Sleep? - I could not tell you honestly the last time I was able to get eight hours! Now I have said this forever, it is your genetic makeup that is responsible for how much sleep you actually need.

Gutsy Gibbon - I love the naming people at Ubuntu! Where do they come up with the names such as “Feisty Fawn“? Hopefully I will get some more work done on my two Xubuntu computers today. I have sound working on the laptop, but having a hard time getting it to work on my desktop (fileserver). Anyone that can lend me a hand, drop me a line! Yes, I have been “modprobe” the card, etc… Doesn’t seem to work, and it’s “seeing” some other card that was part of the old motherboard; no longer in use.

Web 2.0 Startups
- Very good list of what this writer thinks the top 10 has been so far.

Technically Speaking, upcoming is an article I probably shouldn’t be writing. I just need feel it needs to be said! Tentative working title is “Get over it.. Everybody is DIRTY… ” - Look for it very soon right here on this blog.

Chicago Personal Injury Lawyer - Round Up!

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

Not really. Go see the link “Money Words” from that post. What post? The one I linked to the words “Not Really” above. Confused?

No need to be, sit back, read my comments and decide if you want to know more. In other words - Round Up time:

Apple Video Tips - Very useful, as I am just starting to tinker with video.

Ubuntu 6.10 - A cheat sheet; glad to have this one, as I have to do some messing around on this laptop and file server soon. I get ready to every evening, but never get to it.

Old PC’s - They are worth some money now! That is good news. I’m trying to revive and utilize the two that are sitting off to my left. I look like the “poor” version of ShoeMoney right now. hah!

Om Wraps the Photobucket fiasco - I’m really glad I sort of passed on all that today. MySpace vs Photobucket. I checked my MySpace page out earlier, and everything looked fine to me.

April 19th - Get ready for Feisty Fawn — and I was just posting the cheat sheet for Edgy above. 6.10 is going to 7.04 as far as Ubuntu is concerned. Some of you already have the 7.04 beta I’m sure!

MyStartupJobs - Allen always has some good content; daily!

IMSafer - As my comment on this post states — who has time to IM? I’ll IM dangerously! haha!

Technically Speaking, it would be nice to have a vacation home rental that made residual income!

France converts to Ubuntu

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

This is good news for Linux fans such as myself. Yes, I did continue that Ubuntu quest, only to find out my laptop is too old. I did get Xubuntu installed on it, but I’m still looking for a better laptop very soon. Here is an excerpt about the French converting to Ubuntu starting in June 2007:

When members of the French parliament and their assistants return from their summer break, they will conduct parliamentary business on PCs running Ubuntu.

Starting in June 2007, 1,154 desks will feature Linux-based PCs. During the latest IT update for parliamentary assistants, the National Assembly decided to switch from Windows to Linux, allowing the 577 parliament members to switch to nonproprietary software for the first time.

The project was won by IT services company Linagora, an open-source specialist, and Unilog. Mandriva was mentioned in several documents under consideration but was eventually dropped.

As well as using the Ubuntu software, the parliament members and their assistants will use Firefox, OpenOffice, Mozilla’s messaging client Thunderbird, and other applications.

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

I talked about Ubuntu a few times in the past week. I finally was able to install Xubuntu on my old laptop - IBM Thinkpad 380XD PII 233 w/64mb ram! Yes, any donations will be gladly accepted as in a higher end laptop so I can install Ubuntu on it.
