YouTube Live : what about USTREAM.TV and justin.tv?

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

With YouTube taking it live according to the report that I just read here, what happens to USTREAM.TV as well as justin.tv?

Most of you have already seen Justin take a big hit earlier this week, and many comments regarding them is that they are toast, basically. But what about UStream? How long do you think it is before both services are bought by the bigger fish in the pond? What about the earlier rumors a couple of weeks ago that it’s all just a show that eventually will reveal the longer term partnership between UStream and YouTube?

Technically Speaking, looking for others to leave their thoughts.

Justin.tv or Ustream.tv?

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

I just switched to Justin.tv this morning. Not that I broadcast regularly (I am right now), I made the switch because of the fact that Ustream.tv wouldn’t pick up my Macbook built in web cam.

While both services seem neck and neck for customers or users, they should support all platforms. Now I only changed things around because of some of the really cool things that will be coming out via Lookery very very soon. I of course have a rex.tv page and that is the reason. There are things I didn’t realize, but now I do! Read more about Lookery on the blog.

Now one thing that I’m not sure of, and it could be set this way so you don’t overload your router, but I don’t hear any audio via Justin.tv. I guess if you view it, let me know if you hear audio. I’m playing tunes currently on my iTunes.

Technically Speaking, just something fun to do. bathroom lights

Justin.tv raises some money and I turned my Ustream.tv on…

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Justin.tv raised some investment money, an undisclosed amount. I just went over to take a look at Justin.tv again, and I will say I like the new navigation interface. Seems like they have gained a lot of traction these days.

Now I for one use Ustream.tv, and have for quite some time. I rarely turn on my channel, as it’s me sitting here working, typing, listening to music on my iPod, etc. Boring stuff. I turned it on this morning. Come chat with me for a limited time. I don’t know how long I will like this blue light glaring at me from my webcam.

I have actually met the CEO of Ustream.tv, and I told him that his brand was a brand that could go further. As in everything, time is crucial, and timing is of the utmost priority. I am wondering now if Justin.tv has passed Ustream.tv by? I hope not, as I am one of those that hate to have to sign up for new services over and over again.

Technically Speaking, you can also view my Ustream.tv on my site. I think I even put it on my MySpace page.

Round Up time…

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Well it’s another beautiful day in the STL for the moment. I need to get moving on now. The Link Blog was updated, and it’s time for a really quick round up. I have quite a busy day ahead of me, and yes, I’m having the time of my life right now. With that being said, here are a few items that are interesting and I would have expanded on further if I had the time this morning.

FIOS in Ft. Wayne, IN - There is hope if Ft. Wayne, IN is having FIOS. I figured that it would never get out here to the middle of nowhere, but there is now hope! FIOS may not be for just NYC/Long Island much longer.

Brilliance - Yes, I agree. Taking something that is there already and just utilizing it is a great way to make a new startup. Just a word of warning in this. Make sure Amazon doesn’t own the main company as Alexaholic or Statsaholic found out!

Tribler sounds cool
- At least they kept the “e” in their name. I was really wanting to investigate more about this place. Sounds very interesting as it’s a mashup of big media proportions. Well big media as in a way to help you find more media by suggestion.

Google Invests - In the wife of Sergey Brin the co-founder of Google. Interesting things could come about this. I think they probably went ahead and made sure all was good, but usually these sort of things are kind of dangerous. I feel there will be many posts around the internet written today around this one. Opinions will be flying.

Leaving the blogs
- I am thinking that Technorati is changing things to fit a certain market or investment criteria. I think that Technorati should stay tracking the blogosphere. It’s what it did best. Now things are changing up. They are “diversifying“.

Justin.tv goes wild - Well if you are invited as a key person or are in Justin’s group of sleeping friends. That was the funniest thing I read online about this yesterday. Justin was apparently sleeping when this all was launched yesterday. Nice. I still use UStream as I know I just won’t be invited. Watch it there, or on my page located at what I call “rex.tv“. I don’t have the gear to broadcast 24/7 like Justin. I’m also quite boring.

Joost and Hollywood - What can stop the Joost juggernaut? I really can’t see a bad move yet by this company. If you haven’t jumped on the Joost train, I suggest you do so.

Technically Speaking, all will become apparent in short order. Have a great day, and check back to the Link Blog, don’t forget to play your Jambaz game. I did the other day as a matter of fact, so hopefully I can still be competitive.

What would Rex say about this?!?

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

Please check the Link Blog as that will be updated. Currently, there are certain things that can’t be revealed yet.

With that being said, let’s play a couple of games. First, you need to play Jambaz located to the right. I’m in 1st place globally as of this morning. There are still a few days to get in and unseat my top ranking. Play all the sites, as that is how you really score points.

Next, with my lack of posting right now, if you see something online today, leave a comment below as in “What would Rex say about this!”

Technically Speaking, I may be back here very late today, until then I will try to update the Link Blog as I can fit it in. If you want to see me, just tune in to rex.tv - live as long as my stream stays up, now with audio.

UStream.tv is upgrading..

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Yes they are Chris. I noticed the change yesterday morning also. Probably about the same time you dropped the article to the blog. It is a much improved change, and I have given feedback to another Chris in fact, that the window needs to be resized correctly. Other then that, my hope is that they get that auto restart feature done.

Eventually I will move my current rex.tv cam to a new location. I currently am running it off my Xubuntu file server, but I guess I’m just an “uptime” freak. It’s been up like 40 days now. hehehe.. I need to move things around a bit. Now I’d love to talk to you about how you are feeding the URL’s into your stream! That sounds like a great idea. Advertising would be cool also.

Technically Speaking, for those of you that haven’t tried it, you should give it a go. UStream.tv - puts simplicity into lifecasting.

Friday Morning Round Up

Friday, April 27th, 2007

It is Friday, and the feeds show it! Nothing major is going that hasn’t already been talked about earlier this week. If you missed something, just scroll to the bottom and hit the “previous” link.

NLL on YouTube - Sorry YouTube, but this is not the NHL. If you think that hockey hasn’t gained a foothold as a spectator sport, I highly doubt that the NLL is the answer. No offense to the fans of the NLL, just being realistic.

AOL India - I’d like to hear some responses from India on this one. Is it a good thing?

FoxTorrent - The BitTorrent client that Akamai has created.

$450 million - That is the price that Viacom is still reportedly paying for Last.fm. This just hit as I was rounding up the articles for this round up.

ScratchYourself - Sound like a very cool flash thing. I wonder if it catches on?

Technically Speaking, that was it. Really. Things can change in a few hours though. I think the Chinese are going ga-ga still over having MySpace.cn actually launched now.

I’m sure once the hype dies, it will be like that guy pictured with his head down on his laptop (the screenshot at the bottom of the MySpace.cn post!).

Yes, scratch yourself, just don’t do it on Rex TV right? Link Blog is up to date! More possibly later… Go watch the chair (until the UStream.tv intermission mode kicks in - stream dies!).

Justin.tv and UStream.tv server

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

With the dawning of the watch me now era, there are going to be servers built to handle the load. Sun and IBM both intend to get in on this game of voyeur me, look at you. The below specs seems like there could be millions of streams of the justin.tv sex tape all being done at one time. Ok, bad example, but how about kyle.tv? Or Blinkx?

rex.tv doesn’t need one of those, UStream.tv does. UStream intermission mode is a common thing these days with the service. That shows that people are watching and streaming. I hope, as stated in a post a few days ago, UStream.tv incorporates an auto restart feature in the release.

The Sun Fire X4950 Streaming Switch is capable of output up to 320 billion bits of data per second.

UStream.tv intermission mode is a common sign of server overload. I can understand a slight hiccup by my DSL, but pretty much DSL is on. Period. My upstream is uncontested by traffic 95% of the time. There is only one answer, a new hot streaming server. The above server is what Rex Dixon orders.

Technically Speaking, well if I had a sponsor I would have one, but just as I was sitting browsing this evening’s feeds, someone hit me up on the chat. Everyone is a voyeur, and the era of watching lifecasts is about to become that much better.

UStream.tv intermission..

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

UStream.tv intermission? Not tonight. The streaming has been consistent for about 6 hours now. I’m not on a speaking survey mission, but you can hit me up on the chat if you want to drop in to say a quick “hello“. As you can maybe tell, the number of affiliate ads have been taken down to a short list now. The reason of course is that I have been watching, and yes, the ads you see are the ones that people are clicking.

E-Mail Bankruptcy - Now this article is the second one I have seen today saying to kill your unread e-mail. Now maybe it is just me, but I think the most polite thing to do is to at least reply with a one liner. Unless you have nothing to say.

If that is the case, then archive it. Before I started using Gmail pretty much exclusively, I would file everything in a folder. E-Mail Bankruptcy? That just says to me that you didn’t really need an e-mail account. You may as well just burn all those business cards you spent hours designing. Why bother?

E-mail is essential for the online world today. Yes there is the chat option. I do agree there, and you can always pick up the phone and call me. All are great options, but e-mail is something that you need to master sooner then later. To say just go “e-mail bankruptcy” is the easy way out.

Technically Speaking, let me go see if there is anything else this evening. If not, well make sure you check the Link Blog. I try to keep that updated with stuff that I do not have time to write about. There are items in there that might serve you well.

UStream.tv gaining traction; Justin.tv fading?, MySpace Adoption Agency…

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Which one first? UStream.tv gaining traction? Or do we go with the MySpace Adoption Agency? Interesting dilema here. Both are compelling top stories anywhere, and I get to decide which one to run with first. Aw, what the heck, let’s get it on with MySpace!

MySpace Adoption Agency - I’m sure that my buddy in Texas is going to get a big smile when he sees this one. It’s no secret he could take the MySpace executive team to the mat, bodyslam them and not break a sweat.

Seriously now, I am sort of scratching my eyeballs about now. Making sure that the article is real. I guess it must has to be, it’s on CNN. That red stamp 3 letter approval tells me it’s the real deal. Ok, not yet, better sarcasm upcoming.

Now is this a good way to work an adoption? Maybe. I can’t be overly critical, as I was an adopted child. Back in my day, there was not a thing called MySpace. In fact, “MySpace” was the same as stating “get off my cloud“. Unfortunately the era that I was born in was laced in controversy, not technology.

Will this work? I wish the couple luck, but personally I would have recommended Facebook to post the item. Seriously, Facebook isn’t that bad when compared to the junk you have deal with on MySpace. Vertagio is going to even be better if it can gain some traction!

UStream.tv gaining traction; Justin.tv fading? - Well of course! When the rex.tv showed on the scene, we knew that UStream.tv was going to be a gigantic success. You didn’t think you would have one day without some sarcasm, did you?

Seriously, the points made about Alexa are well put. If someone jumps on Justin.tv and sits there and watches him type and answer e-mails for 4 hours, that counts as ONE page view/hit. There is something definitely wrong with Alexa being used everywhere as a standard measure of how good your site is.

UStream.tv, at first I was not really liking it. I didn’t think they were going to succeed due to the Justin.tv factor; being called a “cheap second rate ripoff“. The thing we forget is the rex.tv factor. I know, my usually empty chair is such a big hit stream. Sarcasm hits late today, but it hits well. egotistical sarcasm at that.

One improvement, you know to help with the overly popular rex.tv stream, is an auto restart feature. I do hope that UStream.tv puts that in there in the full release. That would mean, all rex.tv, empty chair watch, all the time. No intermissions!

* the rex.tv stream has been dead since about 9am this morning. To be revived live, in terrible color because I have an old webcam that doesn’t even have audio, some time after 6pm central time.

Technically Speaking, that is it for now. More later possibly.
